Part-time Vegetarian

I’m not really big on New Year’s Resolutions. I’ve kind of always been of the mindset that if you want to make a change, just make it. Don’t wait for some silly holiday to kick your butt into gear. But the timing was pretty good for me this year and while I didn’t want to commit to a WHOLE YEAR of something, I thought I’d give it a month. So January 1, 2018, I decided to become a vegetarian. Just for January. I tried #nomeatJanuary but that didn’t really take off in the social media realm. But I’ve been on this 5 month journey to become a yoga teacher and lots of yoga teachers are vegetarian or vegan for lots of different reasons so I thought I’d give it a try if for no other reason than to make me a little more authentic yoga teacher and at the very least say I tried it. What I found during that month is that I didn’t really miss meat. I discovered so many new recipes. I tried flavors and spices that I’d never had and even dipped my toe into some cultural cuisines that I didn’t know existed. Truth be told, I supplemented meat with carbs for many meals and packed on a few unwanted pounds but that was just me being lazy.
I didn’t go vegetarian to protest the treatment of animals. We buy organic, local (when we can), humane meat and I do believe that humans are carnivorous creatures who shouldn’t limit their diets to strictly rabbit food. I believe that high quality animal protein is good for our bodies. I didn’t go vegetarian so that I could brag about it to everyone and be a pain in the ass at group mealtimes. I didn’t go vegetarian for any philosophical or religious reason. I just did it for me. I didn’t deprive my family of meat during January. But I do feel more connected to the earth. My skin is better – like literally glowing and breakout free for the first time, maybe ever. I feel like I’m tapped into something bigger than me. And that, my friends, is the YOGA.
Stay tuned for some of the amazing recipes I’ve found and we’ll start meal planning and cooking together!
